A survey conducted by Cato Networks reveals that a growing number of enterprises are recognizing the need for networking and security teams to work together.
Out of the 1,694 IT leaders surveyed, 44% said the teams “must work together,” while 30% believed they “must have shared processes.” In response to this, 8% of organizations are creating a unified networking and security group.
However, challenges exist in achieving this goal. 12% of respondents reported “turf wars or struggle working together” between the networking and security teams, and 34% stated that they occasionally face issues working together.
On the positive side, 54% reported that the two teams currently work well together.
Interestingly, 68% of organizations are currently using different platforms for networking and security management, while 76% believe that adopting a single platform for both purposes would enhance collaboration between the teams.
Secure access service edge (SASE) technology plays a role in promoting networking and security collaboration.
In 47% of cases, security teams take the lead in SASE investments but include networking counterparts as necessary.
Meanwhile, 40% stated that networking teams lead SASE evaluations, involving security peers for vendor assessment.
The concept of SASE encompasses SD-WAN, firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS), secure web gateway (SWG), cloud access security broker (CASB), and zero trust network access (ZTNA).
The cloud-based architecture and enforcement of security policies to distributed locations and remote workers make SASE valuable for organizations.
Gartner predicts that organizations will converge networking and security roles in the future, leading to the purchase of single-vendor SASE solutions.
The survey found that 24% of respondents already have one team handling both networking and security responsibilities within their organization.
By merging networking and security teams, organizations aim to eliminate conflicts and enhance collaboration.
This consolidation allows for quicker identification and resolution of potential network and security issues, ultimately improving operational efficiency and alignment between the teams.
